SEOUL -- A state research institute has embarked on the standardization of artificial intelligence deep learning-based prosthetics manufacturing procedures that would help doctors create tailor-made implants such as the cheekbone and cranium using 3D printers to greatly reduce time.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), a state-funded technology development body, said in a statement on Tuesday that it would standardize AI deep learning-based automated medical 3D printing procedures.

The standardization will allow robots to study images created through CT and MRI scans to create tailor-made prosthetics or implants. Prosthetics manufacturing requires a long time because medical engineers create implants by hand after studying medical images.

"We will lead the development of international standards in convergence medical 3D printing that combines artificial intelligence technologies," ETRI head researcher Kang Shin-gak was quoted as saying. ETRI said that experts from foreign bodies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) would participate in the development of new standards.

The International Organization of Standardization (ISO), an international standard-setting body, is working with organizations and research institutes to develop global standards for medical 3D printed implants.
